New Driver Awareness

Attention: open in a new window. PDF | Print | E-mail

We recommend that all new drivers consider taking additional training after they have passed their initial driving test.  Unfortunately, approximately 20% of all new drivers have a collision within their first 12 months on the road, ranging from a paint scrape to serious injury - and even death.

Taking up additional training can help to increase awareness about the dangers on the roads, offer strategies to avoid these dangers and build experience in a safe fashion.

Additional training opportunities include:

  • New Driver Awareness workshops - Free, run by the SSRP, aimed at those in their first year of driving
  • Institute of Advanced Motorists - run a range of courses for new and more experienced drivers
  • RoSPA - the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents offers a range of different courses for a wide range of drivers
  • Pass Plus Course - national course which can entitle you to discounts on your car insurance
