safer for cyclists

Sussex can be a beautiful place to cycle around.

In our towns and cities, using a bike is not only environmentally friendly, but can help beats congestion too.

However, cycling, as with all forms of road use, comes with its own risks.

Between 2007 and 2009, there were over 2,100 accidents involving cyclists in Sussex. Of these, 293 resulted in a serious injury and 14 were fatal.

Some of these injuries were caused by error on the part of drivers, others were caused by inappropriate actions from cyclists. In nearly all cases however, they could have been avoided.

A bicycle is no longer a toy when it is used on the road.  It is a vehicle and should be maintained in a roadworthy condition at all times.

The responsibility for road safety is shared by everyone in Sussex – whether they’re on a bicycle, in a car, on a motorbike or in a goods vehicle. By working together and sharing the roads, we can create safer roads and safer communities for all.
