Driving a vehicle on today’s roads can be a risky business whatever your age or experience level, but for the older motorist, changes in eyesight, hearing, mobility and judgement mean that greater care is needed.
In addition, the physical and health effects of ageing mean that older people are more likely to be killed or injured in road crashes than younger drivers.
Using Police data for the 3 years up to the 31st Oct 09, there have been 46 fatal casualties, 381 serious casualties on Sussex Roads for 65 year olds and over, both male and female.
The Sussex Safer Roads Partnership has produced this simple guide (below) and will be working with organisations such as Age Concern, local authority road safety officers and emergency services to make older drivers feel they have a positive driving future.
