Work to improve transport links at Southwick Railway Station gets underway on Monday November 22.
The West Sussex County Council scheme is designed to make it easier for people to use public transport and to improve access for pedestrians and cyclists.
Work is expected to last 11 weeks and will involve realigning Station Road so that it lines up more closely with the railway bridge. At the same time parking to the front of the station will be reorganised to provide short-stay and disabled bays.
Other improvements include a new drop-off and pick-up area with taxi spaces, an improved cycle link from the South Coast Cycle Route and new pedestrian crossing points.
At the same time the County Council will resurface the whole length of Station Road, put in new dropped kerbs, road markings and tactile paving. Improvements will also be made to the area’s drainage.
Work will take place between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Fridays. Temporary traffic lights will be in operation during the work and the pavement may be closed in small sections at times.
Lionel Barnard, West Sussex County Council Deputy Leader with responsibility for Highways and Transport, said: “This scheme is part of an overall £5 million investment in transport links along the A259 corridor and at local railway stations from Shoreham to Brighton and Hove.
“In addition further improvements are also being carried out at stations by Southern, including new cycle racks, platform waiting shelters and CCTV.”
The £5m was awarded by the Government’s Homes and Communities Agency to support the Shoreham Harbour Regeneration Project.
