Stop, Refresh, Go

Pelican will be Puffed up in Chichester from next week

The pedestrian crossing on the A286 Avenue de Chartres, Chichester, is to be improved, with work starting from Monday March 15.

The existing Pelican crossing will be upgraded to a Puffin crossing. The new crossing will have detectors on it and at the kerb, to extend the time, if necessary, for pedestrians to cross the road. These will also cancel the crossing being activated if the pedestrian decides not to cross the road, meaning there is less chance traffic is stopped unnecessarily. The red/green men are located where the pedestrian pushes the button to activate the crossing, rather than across the road. There is no flashing amber traffic light, or flashing green man.

The £35,000 West Sussex County Council scheme is scheduled to take up to three weeks to complete, weather permitting. It will be carried out Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm. Some night work will be carried out between 7am and 11pm for the first week of the works.

During the night work, Avenue de Chartres will be closed. A diversion route will be in place via A27, A259 Via Ravenna and Stockbridge Road.
