Ken Seymour, Project Manager of the SSRP said,” Our initial response, as we have not seen the detail, is to welcome the focus the Road Safety Minister has added to tackling irresponsible drivers on Britain’s roads.”

He continued,” The SSRP is currently promoting an extensive anti-drink drive campaign across Sussex and appreciates the opportunity to comment on any additional measures that may offer support in our aim to reduce road casualties."

The ‘Worst Christmas Gift’ is the current Sussex-wide SSRP campaign which is running throughout the rest of November and December. Sussex Police Road Policing Unit is currently reinforcing this publicity campaign with high profile road checks of motorists during the run up to the Festive Season. The Fire and Rescue Services of East and West Sussex are supporting the imitative and the next large event is at Halfords, Lewes Road Brighton on Saturday 6th December. As well as further smaller events planned at locations such as at ASDA, Eastbourne (5th Dec) and Shoreham (9th Dec) and Glyne Gap, Bexhill on Wednesday on 10th December.

Sussex Safer Roads also have a ‘Fatal Four’ campaign, warning of using excessive speeds, the non-wearing of seatbelts, the misuse of mobile phones at the wheel and highlighting the ongoing concerns of the dangers of drink-driving. Further Government support on tackling these, as well as dealing with the issues of drug-driving and other speed related proposals will help to send a clear message to the careless minority that penalties are likely to be increased.
