Children at Moulsecoomb Primary School in Brighton will be adding a touch of 'bling' to their shoes, scooters and bikes on Thursday (May 24) as part of a joint Walk to School Week and Bike It event.
Moulsecoomb Primary have been keen to promote cycling to school through the Bike It project and get involved in Walk to School Week, which runs from May 21 to 25,and the children will be holding a parade around the playground to show off their creations.
A giant 'meerkat' will be on hand to present prizes to the most creative - the meerkat is the mascot for children's road safety training because of the animal's habit of looking left and right. (The meerkat costume will also be used for events in other schools during the week)
More than 40 schools across Brighton & Hove, with around 13,000 pupils between them, are taking part in Walk to School Week and encouraging children to walk to school.
Councillor Ian Davey, chair of Brighton & Hove City Council's transport committee, said: "Encouraging children to walk, cycle or scoot to school helps to improve safety and reduce congestion and pollution, by reducing the number of cars around schools. It also means pupils arrive alert and ready for lessons and teachers say children who walk to school are often more attentive in class."
