Package of improvements for A27 near Arundel

A package of improvements to benefit drivers on the A27 near Arundel starts this weekend.

Three schemes are planned for the stretch between the Ford roundabout and Crossbush.

On Saturday the first of those improvements will start, with overnight work to resurface just over half a mile of the road between the Causeway Roundabout and Crossbush Interchange.

It will involve seven overnight closures of the A27 in both directions, then overnight lane closures, temporary traffic lights and a temporary speed limit.

Highways Agency project leader Peter Scott said:

“The A27 is a vital route along the south coast, and the work being carried out will help ensure that it is kept in good condition.  The overnight work starting on Saturday is the first of three schemes in the area, with work to the line markings around the A27 Ford Roundabout and work to strengthen the embankments at Crossbush to follow.

“The work will be carried out using a variety of restrictions, from temporary traffic lights to the use of contra-flow systems and full road closures, which have all been specifically chosen as the most suitable for each location, to minimise disruption. Clearly signed diversions will be in place where appropriate.

“We would advise drivers affected by the work to plan their journeys before setting out, and to leave extra time to reach their destinations.”

The resurfacing work is due to start on Saturday 21 January and be completed by Tuesday 14 February. It will be carried out between 8pm and 6am each night.

From Saturday 21 January up to and including Friday 27 January both carriageways of the A27 between Station Road and just north of Crossbush Lane will be closed.

Westbound road users will be diverted south at Crossbush Interchange on to the A284, the A259, through Bognor Regis, the A29 to rejoin the A27 at Fontwell.  Eastbound road users will follow the above diversion route in the opposite direction.

From Saturday 28 to Tuesday 31 January there will be lane closures, temporary traffic lights and a 40mph speed limit on the A27, with road users escorted past the work at 10mph; access will be maintained to all side roads.

From Wednesday 1 until Tuesday 14 February there will be lane closures, temporary traffic lights and a 40mph speed limit on the A27 with road users escorted past the work at 10mph.  From Wednesday 1 until Friday 10 February there will be no access or exit from Queen Street onto the Causeway Roundabout. Road users will need to follow a short local diversion route via Ford roundabout.

The two further schemes will involve improvements to the road markings at the Ford Road roundabout which is planned to be carried out overnight, over two weeks, in February, and embankment work on the westbound carriageway of the A27 just before it meets the A284 near the Crossbush Interchange. This is due to start in March and be carried out over five weeks and will involve a contraflow.

Details of both schemes will be published nearer the time.
