Every fixed, mobile or red light safety camera in Sussex is installed in accordance with a set of criteria to ensure transparency, proportionality and appropriateness of enforcement.
History of the Safety Camera Criteria
Prior to 2002, each Local Highway Authority developed their own set of criteria for the installation of safety cameras
In 2002, the Department for Transport issued a set of complete criteria that all LHAs across the country needed to adhere to
In 2007, the DfT changed their criteria to ‘guidance’. The SSRP now use an enhanced version of the original criteria, adding in considerations for vulnerable road users.
This section of our website is designed to explain all of the different factors and considerations that are used to install and monitor the network of safety cameras in Sussex. This includes the considerations we go through to identify sites, the size of sites and the use of Exceptional sites.
You can also download the official Safety Camera Criteria PDF file to give even more detail than is contained on the Safety Camera Information pages on this site.
