There are some sites across Sussex that are classed as ‘Exceptional Enforcement Sites’ and these don’t come under the same criteria used for fixed or mobile safety camera enforcement.
The use of these exceptional sites is included in the DfT guidance, one which our criteria are based.
The concept behind the Exceptional sites is to provide a flexible enforcement solution to tackle short term speeding problems at locations where it wouldn’t be appropriate to place a fixed safety camera or have a regular mobile enforcement presence.
These sites can also be used for special events which have had a poor casualty record in the past.
An exceptional site is one where: -
It is of high concern to the community and has a significant speeding issue (e.g. the average speed is 8mph above speed limit in a 30mph) AND
Where the speed limit is considered to be appropriate by LHAs in consultation with the Police AND
Where the site is unsuitable for static enforcement by the Police (unable to comply with ACPO operational guidelines) AND
Where every other cost effective measure has been considered OR
Where collisions are occurring and an engineering solution has been identified, but cannot be implemented in the short-term.
Some of these Exceptional sites will be used by Sussex Police’s Roads Policing Unit on special operations to raise awareness of speed in the community and increase compliance levels.
